Joe`s House was named in honor of Deputy William Joe Hudnall who was killed while on duty November 14, 2006. Deputy William Joe Hudnall was raised in the Kern River Valley, attended local schools and was working as a Kern County Deputy Sheriff during the time he was killed.
Deputy William Hudnall was killed when his department patrol car was struck head-on by a driver who was under the influence of methamphetamine on Highway 178 in Kern River Canyon. The collision caused Deputy Hudnall`s patrol car to fall 100 feet down the canyon. Deputy Hudnall was transported to Kern Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. A prisoner that Deputy Hudnall was transporting was also injured in the crash, but survived.
The driver was arrested, and charged with vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI. He was later sentenced six years in prison for the 2006 death of Deputy William Joe Hudnall.
